Superior Morgul Classic

While the original Red Zinger Bicycle Classic was considered a Boulder-based event, the revival of cycle racing in Boulder county may be based in one of the more famous routes that was just a part of the overall Bicycle Classic.

The Morgul-Bismark Loop lives in infamy for many riders who participated in this race back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, in part due to “the wall”.

This is a section of road which was once a desolate stretch of blacktop in a relatively uninhabited portion of Boulder county that was so steep, some riders couldn’t even make the climb to the top.

After a few years, Celestial Seasonings Tea gave up the sponsorship of the bicycle classic, and it became known as the Coors Bicycle Classic.

Strangely enough, even as cycling has grown exponentially in popularity, the classic never returned.

Until now.

The event covers three days of competition, including friday May 28th through Sunday May 30th, and also family oriented bike events for every age and skill level.

So for you runners, don’t worry, you can check out all the activities and still make the Bolder Boulder race on Monday!

A special treat for those of you who like live music: several local favorites are scheduled to play including Otis Taylor, the legendary Boulder band Firefall, and The Hazel Miller Band. My friend Chris Stongle is now the drummer for Hazel Miller, so it’s definitely a must-see for me!

Here’s some of the lowdown on the Town of Superior:

The Town of Superior is located in southeast Boulder County, Colorado. Named for its “superior” quality of coal in the late 1800s, Superior was a quiet ranching and farming community through much of the 1900s.

With the development of a master-planned subdivision through the 1990s and construction of several prominent retailers and office projects, the community is now home to approximately 12,000 residents. Ranked 13th in’s list of America’s Best Small Towns, Superior has 817 acres of parks and green space and 28 miles of trails

Here’s a little snippet from the superior morgul classic website on the event, and it’s history.

The Morgul-Bismarck Loop is a popular cycling route that was featured in the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic and subsequent Coors International Bicycle Classic from the late Seventies to 1988.

The competitive bike race – sure to attract professionals from across the nation – is set on a 13-mile loop and has three notable climbs.

The final, mile-long climb is known as “the wall” and features a gradual incline culminating in a twelve percent grade. This circuit race is featured in the 1985 film, American Flyers, and remains a popular route for bike enthusiasts today.

Perhaps you’d like to consider living in an area where it’s not unusual to get over 300 days of sunshine a year, there are few or no bugs, the humidity is low, and outdoor activities abound.
