Lafayette Colorado Fracking

Fracking seems to be a hot topic in our area, even though most of the perceived activity if one looks at the areas where there are most of the wells is quite a bit east of Boulder.

In nearby Lafayette, Colorado there’s quite a buzz about fracking as the Lafayette City Council has instructed its City Attorney to draft resolutions stating its opposition to a proposed ban on hydraulic fracturing in the city.

Did we hear that right? A resolution to a proposed ban on fracking?

Usually it’s the other way around when we hear things in the media, or in conversation around the county about fracking.

It seems Lafayette intends to oppose both citizen initiatives which are due to appear on its November ballot.

Lafayette council also opposed to a utility occupation tax which would replace the annual franchise fee paid by Xcel Energy. Really? Did I get that right?

Why would Lafayette want to oppose a revenue stream from Xcel Energy? Perhaps it’s the sentence structure as I read it from the Daily Camera article.

Reading further, the article says

the utility occupation tax would replace the annual $740,000 Excel Energy franchise fee with an occupation tax as part of an effort to decouple the city from the utility and fund renewable energy programs.

Anti-fracking “activists” as they’re called in the media were successful with getting the issue on the ballot due to a petition this summer on the issue.

The Lafayette-based organization called “East Boulder County United” asked voters whether the practice should be banned within Lafayette city limits. Now it’s up to a vote.

In the meantime, the Lafayette City Council passed a three-year moratorium recently on any new oil and gas drilling activity in the city.
