Flatirons Habitat For Humanity Cookoff

hollysmokesposter09Another opportunity for you to learn more about, and support your local Habitat affiliate Flatiron Habitat For Humanity, is upon us. It’s called ‘Holy Smokes’!

The annual competition is an exciting event that gets some good press and usually a really great turn-out. Holy Smokes is a benefit for Flatirons Habitat For Humanity, and it’s basically a clergy cook-off.

This is the fifth annual event where local clergy challenge their culinary skills to raise money for Flatirons Habitat For Humanity. The tips that participating chefs garner from tasters will benefit our local Habitat affiliate.

The event is this Saturday at the Broomfield United Methodist Church. It’s from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. The church is located at 545 W. 10th Avenue in Broomfield.

The planners of this event promise good-spirited banter, good food, and certainly some fun in this spirited and kind-hearted competition which brings faith communities together according to Derek Wittman, the congregational outreach coordinator with Flatirons Habitat For Humanity.

There are no rules to the event, which will include 14 clergy, representing 13 faith-based communities. Each will prepare nearly 500 servings for the event and so tasters will then tip their favorite food or their favorite chef.

Meatballs, brisket, souffle’, and even a central american inspired dish could be found.

Last year the event raised about $5000 for the local Habitat affiliate, Flatirons Habitat for Humanity.  If you choose to go, and you want to contribute, you can use cash, but checks and credit cards are also accepted, and donations given that way are tax deductible according to a recent article in the Daily Camera that quoted Jan Hawley, the Development Director for Flatirons Habitat For Humanity.

I’ve recently been working with Jan Hawley and also John Lovell, the Executive Directory for FHFH on their Outreach Committee. If you’d like to get involved at Flatiron Habitat, or just have some questions, call or email me and I’ll put you in touch with the right people, or perhaps even the right answers!
