Construction Boom in Colorado

Union Station constructionColorado Construction of new housing and even commercial building is going against the trends as compared to the national data.

“Part of this is a story of emerging economic momentum,” said Anirban Basu, chief economist with Associated Builders and Contractors, who gave a forecast Thursday morning in Denver.

Lots of oil and gas production, as well as metro Denver’s ability to lure young professionals due to the strong job market, has helped the metro area, and even many parts of the state to get a head start over other parts of the nation.

Construction jobs in our state have gone up tremendously through February and it’s up 6 percent,  there’s only about 2.5 percent annual pace nationally, according to Ken Simonson (the chief economist of the Associated General Contractors of America),  as he mentioned during an economic webcast recently.

Some of the most robust construction activity is taking place in Denver’s core, which the Downtown Denver Partnership bragged about Thursday morning at a separate event on its “development map.” I’m seeing that show up with buyers scrambling to make purchases in this very area right now. Just put one under contract for a client in one day. It’s definitely moving at high speed.

The downtown Denver regiona has seen over 5,500 residences, over 2,200 hotel rooms and more than 2.5 million square feet of office space either added or under construction in the last six years. Almost 25 projects with a value of up to $1.8 billion are expected to be done in 2014, and at least 30% are located in the Central Platte Valley.
