BVSD Later Start Time High Schools

high school fairviewThe Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) is contemplating a later start for high school students. Fairview High in the Table Mesa neighborhood has already implemented a later start just a few years ago.

The idea has been cirulating the community for several years and has periodically dominated local social media.

Boulder High School in downtown Boulder is another school which changed its start time recently, independent of BVSD input.

Driven from many other studies, articles and social media threads as well, the task force is recommending a later start for high school students. The recommendation is based on research on teenage student natural sleep patterns.

Currently, there isn’t a standard start time for high schools within BVSD. For example Fairview High School in south Boulder in the center of the Table Mesa neighborhood begins just after 8:00 am, whereas Monarch High School in Louisville, Colorado begins at 7:30.

The BVSD superintendent, Bruce Messinger reportedly is seeking input from staff, parents, and students, as well as studying the logistics of changing school start times.

It sounds like the major concern from students and families is that starting later means ending later, and that may interfere with after school activities, sports, and student’s jobs.

The comments from these schools indicates that the later start works well and that the change is widely supported and accepted, and that the extra half hour of sleep has really worked well for their students.
