Boulder Realtor Makes Earth Day Run

Today is the day for the Earth Day 5k run / walk / expo.

It’s a benefit for the Center for ReSource Conservation and it’s also a qualifier for the Bolder Boulder 10k coming up at the end of May. I ran this 5k two years ago for the first time since I needed a qualifying time for my first Bolder Boulder.

The race is held at the CU-Boulder Research Park, and claims to be the fastest and flattest 5k course in Boulder, CO. This year’s race starts today at 9:30 so if you are reading this the day of the post and you want to participate, you may have time.

Here’s some directions that assume you’re coming into Boulder and not already in town. If you’re in Boulder you can probably figure out where to go from this same info.

Take the Foothills Parkway exit off of US 36. Follow Foothills Pkwy north to Colorado (2nd light). Turn left (west) onto Colorado Ave. CU Research Park is on the right (north) side of Colorado Ave. CU Research Park is off of Colorado Avenue, between Foothills Pkwy & 30th Street in Boulder. There’s generally plenty of parking in the lots around the facility.

The 2006 Earth Day 5k was a wake up call for me (my first running race) and I had a blast getting to run with all the hoopla of an event. Not quite the same as the lone, early-morning runs around Rock Creek Ranch in Superior.

That first event qualified me for the “E” wave and my plan was to finish with a time at least under 60 minutes. Well, I did it in 58 minutes flat, so that was great in my mind. Somehow I got into the “E” wave which was a little forward of where I probably should have been based on the number of people passing me during that 58 minutes running through Boulder in 2006.

The next year I did much better and instead it was me passing people. I think that had something to do with the Bolder Boulder officials starting me farther back in 2007 due to my 58 minute finish the previous year.

Well, this Earth Day 5k should be a great one. The weather is supposed to be beautiful — if not a slightly warm. I really like running when it’s cool (say about 45 degrees) and today’s supposed to be around 58 to 60 by the 9:30 am start time.

Here are some sponsors for the Earth Day event:

Bella Energy, Boulder College of Massage Therapy, Boulder Green Building Guild, Boulder Rotary Club, The Camera, Clif Bar, Eco-Cycle, Environment Center at CU, Fast Forward Sports, Gaiam, Joyful Earth-friendly Interiors, Mix One, Namaste Solar, NAU, Optimal Health Chiropractic, Pedal to Properties, Pixie Mate, ReDirect Guide, Whole Foods, and Wildlands Restoration Volunteers.

If you decide to go, even if it’s just to check out the ‘green’ expo, perhaps I’ll see you there!
