Boulder Colorado 2014 USA Pro Cycling Challenge

After taking a year off from hosting the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in 2013, it looks like Boulder is back on the band wagon with USA Pro Cycling.

Cycling is big in Boulder, in case you weren’t already aware, and not having the race here wasn’t something local Boulder cycling enthusiasts were thrilled about.

While they haven’t worked out all the kinks of the plan, local Boulder cycling supporters were happy to hear that the final stage of the 2014 USA Pro Cycling Challenge will start in Boulder this coming year.

The route will leave Boulder for Golden, up Lookout Mountain, and over the top to run back down to central Denver where riders will complete three laps around a course set around the downtown Denver area.

In a pretty cool twist, the final stage of the race was determined by fans who voted online.

There were four options to choose from. One included simply a circuit race in Denver like this year (2013), or other various routes through Golden, Denver, Boulder etc. The emphasis on finishing in Denver seemed to be set in stone as race organizers are keenly aware of the large crowd of spectators in excess of 200,000 people they garner there.

I remember back in 2012 when the race here took racers up Flagstaff Mountain that felt something like the mountain portions of the Tour de France.

For those of you who wonder why we didn’t have anything here this year… the city didn’t bid to host the race, and local organizers only bid to host a start of the race in Boulder for 2014.

Don’t blame it on the USA Pro Challenge folks.

Now if we could just get back to the days of the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic and see riders circling North Boulder Park in the Newlands Neighborhood! Now that would be something.
